Dear
Fellow NVSA Shooters Well, our first real "full year" is on the books. In the last year, we've made some huge improvements. We've increased our membership, made some great new friends, pretty much packed our range trailer with neat stuff, and for my money, had the best darn year-end awards celebration I've ever attended (and I've been to quite a few). Now, for those of you who missed our gala event, here are the 1999 shooting season Year-End Awards:
We also
gave special Awards of Recognition to some of our members who really
distinguished themselves in helping our club. Bill
Hemmings: Bill went to bat for the NVSA and was able to secure
our wonderful equipment trailer. At a time when we had virtually nothing
and needed a "boost", Bill came through. The trailer really helped
us begin to look like a serious club. Phil
Osbourn: Phil started donating to the club before we ever
met him. Phil donated the plywood we used to make our first portable
walls. Recently, Phil built us the fine set of stairs we now use for
our trailer. These stairs are so nice, I plan to use the space beneath
them as a summer guest house for my mother-in-law. Wade
Bandy: Wade quietly, and without any hope for reward, built
us a great set (26!!) of target stands (metal, welded and everything!).
Wade didn't stop there. He built us a great steel rack for these target
stands, several steel plates, stands for the steel plates and as if
that wasn't enough, fixed our damaged pepper poppers!!. Dan
Hogan: Dan was one of our original "go-to" guys. He built
most of our steel targets, has fixed a bunch of our broken stuff,
built walls, made new range gadgets and has been a part of nearly
every range improvement we've done. Dan just made us some swiveling
target stands that will be quite intriguing. Please keep in mind that these persons represent the best in each of our wonderful members. I would be remiss if I didn't mention people like the Dave and Joy Casner, Walt and RaeAnn Burris, Dave and Judy Wallace, Ken Horton, my wife Mona, Ron's wife Peggy, and last, but not least, the big man himself, Ron Durham. I tell you folks, we've got the best group of members any club could have. And next year things will just get better. |

Man, that was a good time. Phil Osbourn flipped the steaks, Ron Durham MC'd the awards and I was just plain happy to be there. I must say, the high point of the festivity was a fine set of musical numbers by Joy Casner and RaeAnn Burris. I didn't even know they sang!! Boy was I surprised when the music began. I haven't been that embarrassed since the time I dreamt I went to school dressed only in my underwear, only to realize that I wasn't dreaming. Honestly though, I was truly touched. I must say that I was relieved when the musical selection shifted to Ron. Ron and I were both thrilled when the tune transitioned to the sad tale of two hapless guys, Walt and Dave. A song that sad can really make a feller cry (sniff). Besides the musical entertainment, we had a great prize table. I completely lucked out when Dave Wallace gave me his prize, a super nice range bag. I had just resigned myself to using my wife's pink plastic make-up case for a range bag when Dave took pity on me and swapped his winning ticket for mine. Dave eventually won a nice prize himself with my ticket (I believe he either won a body-piercing gift certificate, or a used Q-Tip). I think the only guy with less luck than Dave was John Osbourn. John was the last person drawn. He won 1,000 used primers and a free personal flea dip. (If you've met John's bride Ally, you'll quickly understand that he's used up all his good luck for several year's to come. Ally, on the other hand, should be about ready to win the lottery). Needless to say, a great time was had by all. Ron and I are already planning for next year (hee...hee...hee...). |
October Match:Ron will be your fearless match director for October (17th) . He'll be setting up on the Saturday before the match (16th) . If you can help, or would like to do a stage, please give Ron a call (530 673-5313). Ron assures me this will be a "fall classic" November MatchI will be the November match director. This will be our annual turkey shoot. Except for Ron, there will be no live turkeys. We will be vying for some thanksgiving gobbler gift certificates, however. Website:We should have our website by the time you get this. We'll give more information at the October match. Other News:Ron and I will be making a presentation to the Gridley City Council on Monday, November 01, 1999. We'll present the City with a plaque and a small donation. We've got a great deal in Gridley and we want t make sure we keep the City happy.

Match Results:Our August and September matches were both great successes. We shot from moving vehicles, survived pepper spray attacks, "sicked" our dog on bad guys, spent time at the barber, and generally honed our shooting skills. I'd like to thank our thankless heros, the range officers. No one wants to standout in the sun for hours, patiently explaining the same stage over and over again. But without you guys and gals, we'd all be fishing, or watching TV. Remember if you're still new to the game, start thinking about learning how to be a range master. You learn by doing it ( just like I learned about the exciting life of being a fashion model, by doing it. At least until that stupid court order took effect) Complete match results can be found on the Match Results page. Well friends and neighbors, that's about it for now. Remember...vote early and often. -Michael Boyd, VP |
